Yearsley Group’s IT apprentice Callum Spencer, has scooped Bury College Apprentice of the Year Award 2014. The ceremony took place on Wednesday 2 July at Bury College Campus.
Callum, 20, has worked as an apprentice in the IT department at Yearsley Group since November 2012. Having completed a Level 3 Diploma in IT User Skills Callum has since gained full time employment with Yearsley Group.
Choosing to follow the Apprenticeship route, provides apprentices with the opportunity to gain experience within the workplace whilst achieving a qualification and earning at the same time.
On accepting the award, Callum commented, “I am very happy and honoured to win this award as I have worked very hard to achieve my goals over the course of my apprenticeship. Without Bury College I would not have been given the opportunity to start such an amazing career at such a well-established business.” He continued, “I now want to continue studying to achieve my Level 4 Diploma which will provide me with necessary skills and qualification to pursue a career in IT management.”
Yearsley Group, the UK’s largest frozen food logistics service provider and food sales company employing over 1200 staff, is committed to the development of its people and wants to develop the apprentices into future leaders of the business. Many of current management started with the business as trainees and Yearsley Group is looking for the next generation to continue this, with people who have an interest in the subject and the industry.
Managing Director, Harry Yearsley added “Many congratulations to Callum for winning Apprentice of the Year Award. Through bringing a college graduate into the business who has a basic knowledge of their specialism, we can impart our experience and business understanding to help them ‘learn whilst they earn’ in a real business environment. From our perspective we gain an enthusiastic and driven employee who is keen to get into our industry and, who will hopefully aim to build a lifelong career within the Yearsley Group.”
